Schooners Set Sail
At the Annual Regatta and Race
By Kahrin Deines
August 27th, 2007
One hundred years ago, Sir Thomas Lipton commissioned a match between some of the best sailors and schooners of the day in a race from Boston to Gloucester and back again. Provincetown’s Rose Dorothea, a schooner that is now honored by a half-scale replica in the Provincetown Library, won the Lipton Cup handily, leaving little room for doubt about where the swiftest schooner fleet took harbor in 1907.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Provincetown’s harbor was home to many such swift vessels. These graceful and beautiful ships, which fished the Grand Banks, played an important role in the town’s economy and culture for many years and together must have made for a stunning vista, with sail after sail set in elegant sway along the waterfront.
In honor of the role that schooners have played in Provincetown’s history, each year since 2002 the Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta and Race has been held, which will take place this year between September 7 and 9, just a few weeks past the centennial of the first Lipton Cup.
Provincetown’s Bay Lady II and the Schooner Hindu, which was recently returned to the harbor after a lengthy restoration, will both take part in the race, on September 9, along with schooners from other areas. Opening the day’s events, there will also be a Parade of Sail, a procession of the stately schooners across the harbor, at 11 a.m.
Besides offering a glimpse of what Provincetown’s harbor must have once looked like, this event brings people together to celebrate Provincetown’s rich maritime heritage. After the arrival of the schooners and their crews on September 7, there will be an opening reception at the Cape Inn’s Whaler Lounge. A crew party will follow on September 8, with live music, dancing and food on Cabral’s Wharf, and there will be an Awards Ceremony and Banquet after the race on September 9.
The Great Provincetown Schooner Race was founded in 2002 as a tribute to the late captain of the Schooner Hindu, John Bennett, who had begun planning a schooner race in Provincetown before his unexpected death that spring.
