The Provincetown Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla, set for Saturday, September 11, recently participated in the annual Carnival Parade. Their float featured clad and semi-clad members who carried the Swim for Life sign and passed out flyers, and a convertible displaying Prayer Ribbons and a mascot named Wilma.
Prayer Ribbons are five foot long colored ribbons on which people write the names of loved ones. They are displayed at the Celebration of Life Concert the night before the event at the Meeting House (Friday at 8 pm), and then grace the magnificent deck of the Boatslip at the Swim, acting as a kinetic, visual witness to the fundraiser.
The public is invited to all events, including the Mermaid Brunch beginning at noon on Saturday, and the awards ceremony that follows. Come greet the swimmers as they arrive on shore from Long Point around 11 am. For swimmer, kayaker and volunteer information: www.swim4life.org, thecompact@comcast.net
Aug. 1 - Swim for Life — Update
Notes from Jay Critchley – Swim for Life director
Artist Varujan Bogoshian, whose monoprint "Courage" is the featured art for this year's Swim for Life, set for September 11, arrived on the shores of Provincetown in 1948 and has had a love affair with the town ever since. There was a time when battered boats and beams and chunks of wood littered the backshore and parts of Provincetown Harbor, and Bugsy mined these relics for his artistic practice. Thus, his singular Totem series. His Swim for Life image celebrates Provincetown's iconic totem in a glorious field of blue.
Posters, post cards and t-shirts of this image are available. For registration forms for swimmers, paddlers, security boaters, volunteers and sponsorship opportunities, or to make a donation, contact: Swim for Life, P.O. Box 819, Provincetown, MA 02657, 508-487-1930, email, thecompact@comcast.net, and at its website, www.swim4life.org.
A show of his recent work is presently featured at the Berta Walker Gallery (www.bertawalkergallery.com).
