Tall Ships Return
The Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta - Sept. 7 to 12
August 29th, 2010
More than 100 years ago, Sir Thomas Lipton commissioned a match between some of the best sailors and schooners of the day in a race from Boston to Gloucester and back again. Provincetown’s Rose Dorothea, a schooner that is now honored by a half-scale replica in the Provincetown Library, won the Lipton Cup handily, leaving little room for doubt about where the swiftest schooner fleet took harbor in 1907.
 | Along with the race, there are a number of parties, tours, talks and other activities for spectators, including the popular Parade of Sail, where the tall ships will pass in close view of MacMillan Pier on September 10. |

Years ago Provincetown’s harbor was home to hundreds of schooners and vessels. These graceful and beautiful ships, which fished the Grand Banks, played an important role in the town’s economy and culture during the 19th century, and must have made for a stunning vista, with sail after sail set in elegant sway along the waterfront.
Each year since 2002 the Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta has been held to commemorate the Lipton Cup and honor Provincetown’s maritime culture. The event takes place this year on September 7, with schooner captains and crews racing from Gloucester to Provincetown to spend a few days sailing off the coast of the Outer Cape. (You can watch it live at the Squealing Pig with a beer – and friends – at hand!)
Along with the race, there are a number of parties, tours, talks and other activities for spectators, including the popular Parade of Sail, where the tall ships will pass in close view of MacMillan Pier on September 10.
Schooners and catboats are offering tours of the harbor on the same day, and the Provincetown Coast Guard Station will be open to the public.
Meanwhile, through the Regatta’s Sail in the Arts program, a number of galleries and arts organizations are hosting exhibits of maritime art. On September 8, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum will host an auction of 20 wooden art boats, which were built by Provincetown High School students and customized by local artists. On September 11, the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill offers a four-hour cruise for artists and tourists, presenting a rare opportunity to watch painters develop works inspired by the town’s skyline and the day’s sailing race.
A number of parties and other fun events are also taking place in the surrounding days. To find out more information, visit www.provincetownschoonerrace.com.
