Sunset Cruises

August 17th, 2013

I needed a break the other night -- nothing along the line of a long trip somewhere, but a change of pace and scene, a chance to unwind in our beautiful natural environment, away from large crowds. So last evening, I took a Sunset Sail on the Bay Lady II. I picked up my ticket at 6 pm on Macmillan Wharf, boarded the beautiful Lady at 6:15, and we cast off precisely at 6:30. For the next two hours, I enjoyed a lovely interlude with stunning sunset skies, gentle waves and a cool breeze. This lovely, 73-foot gaffe-rigged schooner was built in 1984 by "Washburn and Doughty" in Woolwich, Maine, and is the largest and safest schooner in the passenger trade plying Cape Cod waters.

Later in the cruise, as the sun sank below the horizon to the northwest end of town, the brilliant orange-red light reflecting off clouds seemed like waves, mirroring those on the sea.

Last night, we had both children (as young as 7) and a small, well-behaved border terrier named Moka, who was a big hit with my fellow passengers, wearing his very own life vest, in town with his owner from Quebec. Later in the cruise, as the sun sank below the horizon to the northwest end of town, the brilliant orange-red light reflecting off clouds seemed like waves, mirroring those on the sea. It was a beautiful trip; it centers and rejuvenates you, and reminds you how small we are compared to the beauty and majesty of nature. Best of all, it is casual and affordable! The sunset sail is $30, and guests are welcome to bring coolers or bags with dinner, cheese and crackers, wine and beer to enjoy while drifting. The cruise also offers water, soda and chips for $1 each. Reservations recommended; wear shoes with non-slip soles and carry a sweater or jacket to ward off the evening chill if it's a cooler day. Many thanks to Captain Bob Burns and crew members Kate and Hannah for a perfectly relaxing trip filled with magic and pleasure!

Would you rather have a 1.5 hour Sunset and Lighthouse Cruise, with complimentary hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks? Then the Viking Princess is the ship for you. This steel-hulled, 40 foot long passenger boat is the only harbor tour on Cape Cod that runs on biodiesel, and which uses copper-free, environmentally friendly paint. This 49-passenger craft also has space heaters under the bench seating along the port and starboard sides of the vessel, which help chase away the chill of breezy nights! Every day, as dusk approaches, the sea birds return to roost on the breakwater as you take a gentle cruise close past Long Point Lighthouse within view of two more lighthouses and through the quiet anchorage in the harbor.

If you prefer to enjoy that sunset in a larger group, you can reserve a variety of vessels for special events, weddings, memorial services or just fun parties at Flyer's Boat Rentals! A typical sunset trip might see your party tour the harbor, be dropped off at Long Point Lighthouse at the very tip of Cape Cod for photos before enjoying snacks and cocktails as you drift quietly through the sea grass of the harbor cove and watch the amazing 'Cape Light' paint its breath-taking colors on the sky as the sun sets gently over the marshland. You can choose a sailboat for 6 people, the Old Port Launch for parties of up to 18, or their Sea Ark which carries parties of 32. Visit their web site for more information and reservations.
