Play Outside, it's Fabulous!

June 18th, 2014

As I write this, Provincetown is having one of its picture-perfect summer days – temperatures in the 70s, bright warm sunshine and cooling breezes to ease any exertions. We have many of those days here, and there are all kinds of ways to see and enjoy the outdoors.

To combine a land-and-sea experience, take Flyer’s Long Point Shuttle, hike past Long Point and Wood End Lighthouses, and cross back into town on the mile-long breakwater!

Art's Dune Tours, which recently received Cape Cod Life Magazine's Best of Sightseeing award, is also rated as the #1 most popular activity in Provincetown by TripAdvisor.com! For anywhere between one and three hours, they take you on an immersive tour of the dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore, riding in their off road-modified vans, and you even have a choice of a sunset tour or a sunset tour with an old fashioned New England Clambake! The Costa family has been making these tours for 68 years, and according to their customers, they are doing it best! Don't miss the grandeur and beauty of these New England wild lands with the folks who know them best.

If ocean vistas are your thing, you've got to take a whale watch! There are two companies providing tours, as well as a number of charter boats which offer private whale watches. Dolphin Fleet is the largest, offering multiple cruises on several different boats, with info about many of the identified cetacean leviathans who visit these waters! Those taking this tour have reported humpbacks, minke and fin whales, entire schools of dolphins, mother whales with their calves, and even a sighting or two of the incredibly rare bow-head whale! It's a great way to soak up the sunshine and fresh air in our gorgeous New England waters! You can also head to Provincetown Whale Watch, offering multiple trips each day, with trips and rates that are equally competitive. It will be a memory that will last a lifetime!

If you'd rather keep moving, you have many options! Have you ever wanted to fly? Try taking a Provincetown Parasail! Soar over the Harbor (at a variety of altitudes) while being towed by the boat below you, and experience our town the way the seagulls do! It's an adventure to thrill any daredevil, and the best part is, it's even safe for a lot of kids! Rigorous standards for equipment, and boat speed to training certifications ensure excitement with minimal worry!

Want to pilot your own vessel? You can rent a kayak at Venture Athletics or Provincetown Aquasports, or head to Flyer's Boat rentals for a powerboat or a sailboat. To combine a land-and-sea experience, take Flyer’s Long Point Shuttle, hike past Long Point and Wood End Lighthouses, and cross back into town on the mile-long breakwater! It's a day of sun, surf, sand and scenery – pack a picnic lunch!

Prefer pedal power? There are FOUR shops now offering bike rentals of everything from mountain bikes to adult trikes, to kids' bikes, tandems and trailers for securing the little ones! Arnold's Bikes (329 Commercial St.), Gale Force Bikes, and Ptown Bikes offer a complete range of equipment, as does our newest vendor, The Bike Shack! Cruise their web sites, pick the bike you want, make an online reservation, then pick up your wheels! You can find road and bike maps at multiple locations including Town Hall, some of the municipal bathrooms, and the Province Lands Visitor Center. Cruise the streets and neighborhoods, tour the Province Lands and the moors, or navigate the curves of the Beech Forest bike trails --choose your route, and take off! Hikers also have access to multiple trails in the National Seashore and the Beech Forest!
