Provincetown - The Place Where It All Began

A Prose Poem

March 22nd, 2006

Provincetown - the place where it all began. Where the Pilgrims first set foot on American soil, America's first art colony, the birthplace of American playwriting, the place where diversity is more than a district or a distant dream...

A community of iconoclasts who have forsaken the security of the mainland to live on the edge, on a frontier of the spirit . . .

Provincetown - where you find small town connectedness without small town minds. Where you can walk down the street, lean over the picket fence & chat with your neighbor about the petunias or the Pulitzer Prize winner next door - a Norman Rockwellish kind of place - with a twist. Because it's also one of the most cosmopolitan, edgy, vibrant, creative places on earth - a little bit of Soho, Rive Gauche, Sunset Strip, Christopher Street and Woodstock (both NY & VT)...

Provincetown - where one of the largest historic districts on the American coast hugs the harbor below the dunes and where history is manifest in its soul. Wherever they came from and whenever they arrived, everyone who calls Provincetown their home is embraced and encouraged and emboldened by its history as a community of iconoclasts who have forsaken the security of the mainland to live on the edge, on a frontier of the spirit...

--From the rustic remote dune shacks where Eugene O'Neill brought to a sizzle the lightning birth of American playwriting to the disco drama beating its feet down Commercial Street on hot summer nights...

--From the exquisite freedom to be yourself (or the imaginary you) to the chance to be a part of pure democracy in action...

--From the West End where the Pilgrims first landed on the American continent to the incredible view from the top of the monument that commemorates their landfall and serves as an emblem of the spirit of Provincetown recognized around the world...

--From the gallery hopping art nexus of Friday nights in the East End to the lone painter working in the vastness of the marshes at the very tip of this continent...

--From a fabulous dinner in some of the country's most highly awarded restaurants to a picnic in the dunes...

--From secluded sunny beaches to hot afternoon dances...

--From ships to shops and karaoke to caviar. From history to hilarity and exploration to exhilaration...

This special place has put its arm around so many, from the native Americans to the Pilgrims, from the Yankees to the Portuguese, from divas to drag queens, from artists and writers to the restless and rebellious, from the fisher folk to the fashion plate, from the gnarled hand clutching a sea full of memories to the youthful clasping of a passionate hope...

Provincetown - one of the only places on this earth immediately recognizable in images from outer space, and a place whose name is known around the world...

Provincetown - the place where everyday mother nature reminds you of the evanescent ephemerality of things, where you must seize the day - and the night.

Provincetown - from the silvering snowflakes drifting down the street on winter's wind to the shimmering shifting of the sands in the summer breeze, this magical place with its special light follows you wherever you are with its siren song. It is a place that hugs you to its heart. It is our hometown and your hometown, too...
We welcome you...
