Music and More at the Provincetown Portuguese Festival

June 30th, 2007

Long before Provincetown’s beauty and culture began to attract visitors from far-flung regions, its location at the end of a land spit that spirals outwards into the Atlantic brought fishermen and whalers to its shores. And many of the travelers who made their way to Provincetown during this period were Portuguese.

Along with their sea smarts, these Portuguese sailors brought their families and culture to Provincetown, giving the town a vibrant look and feel that continues to beguile visitors today.

In honor of the cultural contributions the Portuguese have made to Provincetown over the years, each summer a Portuguese Festival is held, with events for the whole family.

This summer the Provincetown Portuguese Festival will take place from June 26 to June 29.

The festival will get off to a start with an opening night party at Bas Relief Park on June 26. Over the next three days, a number of musicians will perform, including Michelle Romeiro, Bossa Triba and the Berkshire Bateria Samba, among others. There will also be a waterfront Fado concert on June 28, with Celia Maria, Natalie Pires, Tania, Jose Carlos and Daniel Guerra. Fado, which means fate in Portuguese, is a Portuguese folk music known for its blending of joyful and mournful tones.

Many events are also on the schedule for kids, such as a fishing derby and performances by the Toe Jam Puppet Band.

The highlight of the celebration, the annual festival parade, will take place on June 28, with a colorful procession of twirling dancers clothed in traditional Portuguese folk dress. The parade will proceed down Commercial Street, which is always bedecked in bright flags for the occasion.

Another highlight, the Blessing of the Fleet, will take place on June 29. Fro the event, Provincetown's wooden fishing fleet is blessed in preparation for another successful year at sea.

In addition, The Provincetown Art Association and Museum is hosting a special exhibit in honor of the festival.
