Students Write, Paint and Curate

Through the Museum's Youth Education Program

March 16th, 2008

“I am looking at a peaceful painting of a dirt mountain and a big bush. I love the bluebird sky”: so reads the lovely description of a Ross Moffett painting written by first grader Sarah Plante.

The students writing and artwork, along with the original works by Ross Moffett that they used as inspiration, will be on display at the museum until April 13.

She continues: “There are rocks on the mountain, a beautiful tree, greenish-yellowish grass and some greenish-blueish tiny trees. There’s a little white on the mountain and some flowers up front. I love the color! I want to go to this place. It is the prettiest painting I have ever seen. I would like to have it.”

Sarah was one of 27 students from Veterans Memorial Elementary School that participated in a youth program at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

In the program, students chose paintings and prints by Ross Moffett from the museum’s permanent collection. Moffett’s work was chosen to be the focus of the program because he played a large role in the formation of the museum and his paintings of fishermen offer a colorful view into Provincetown’s past.

After choosing one of Moffett’s works, the students learned how to write about the piece and then created a visual response with oil pastels.

The students writing and artwork, along with the original works by Moffett, will be on display at the museum until April 13.

Through the museum’s Youth Education Program for Student Curating, students from all over Cape Cod have been given the opportunity to create their own exhibitions. The program gives students a chance to develop both critical and creative skills, while promoting an awareness of the area’s history and culture.

There will also be an exhibit of works by Patrick Webb opening at the museum on the same day. To find out more about the museum and the exhibits, call 508.487.1750 or visit www.paam.org.
