GLAD Celebrates 30 Years

At the Annual Summer Party in Provincetown

July 13th, 2008

It all began when Boston police launched a sting operation targeting gay men in the Boston Public Library, which led to the entrapment and arrest of 103 men.

GLAD's Annual Summer Party will take place on July 26 on the grounds of the Pilgrim Monument.

That’s when John Ward, who at the time was Boston’s only openly gay lawyer, along with other members of the gay community, decided to take action, filing a suit against the city and setting in motion a battle for legal equality that continues today.

That was 1978, and the birth of the Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, which has now been fighting for equal rights for the LBGT community for 30 years.

Over that time, GLAD has won many milestone cases, including the landmark Goodridge suit that made equal marriage rights the law of the land in Massachusetts.

Given this history, celebration is definitely in order, and will justly be the focus on July 26, when GLAD’s annual Provincetown Summer Party heralds the organization’s work over the last 30 years.

The party will take place on the grounds of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, with cocktails, activities for the kids, and great views of the harbor.

Kate Clinton, who has also been fighting the fight for close to 30 years with the weapon of humor, will be on site to host an auction supporting GLAD’s continued work. Prizes include VIP passes to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, tickets to a Red Sox vs. Yankees game, trapeze classes, a weeklong vacation on the grounds of an Irish castle, and much more. The bidding will start online on July 24 and close at the party.

In addition to its litigation and advocacy work, GLAD also works to educate the public about LGBT issues and provides a Legal InfoLine for the New England area.

GLAD is a non-profit organization that relies on individual donations for most of its funding. The annual Summer Party will take place on July 26 between 4 and 7 p.m. at the Pilgrim Monument and Museum. Tickets to the party cost $60, but children are welcome at no charge.
