Swim or Paddle for Life

A Community Celebration

August 24th, 2008

Whether you’re swimming from Long Point to Provincetown’s shoreline, or standing on the deck of the Boatslip Resort cheering, Swim for Life is an amazing experience.

On September 5, the annual Celebration of Life Concert at the Unitarian-Universalist Meeting House.

Taking place this year on September 6, the event brings people from far and wide to celebrate healing and life in Provincetown. Some come for the challenge of the open water harbor swim, others want to help raise money for important community organizations, and still others just love the fun.

Each year Swim for Life participants inscribe Prayer Ribbons with the names of loved ones whom they wish to celebrate. The colorful, 6-foot ribbons wave in the breeze from the deck of the Boatslip on the day of the swim, guiding the swimmers across the harbor.

The night before the swim, there is an annual Celebration of Life Concert at the Unitarian-Universalist Meeting House. Pianist and composer John W. Thomas began the Celebration of Life concerts in the 1990’s to celebrate the lives of loved ones lost to AIDs.

The last four years, Swim for Life has also been held in conjunction with the Provincetown Schooner Regatta, which makes it an especially great weekend to visit. For the first time this year, Swim for Life will also be broadcast live on Provincetown’s Outermost Community Radio Station, WOMR 92.1 FM.

Jay Critchley, an artist and activist, started the annual Swim for Life event in 1988 to celebrate the healing waters and ecology of the Provincetown Harbor, as well as raise money for local AIDS services. Every year since, swimmers and paddlers have undertaken a journey across the harbor, from Long Point to the Boatslip Resort, to physically demonstrate their love for life, health and community.

Organized by the Provincetown Community Compact, Swim for Life has evolved into a large-scale community benefit for AIDS, women’s health and youth organizations, last year raising more than $170,000 for a number of beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries of this year’s Swim for Life include the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Helping Our Women, Outer Cape Health Services, Provincetown Rescue Squad and Lower Cape Ambulance.

Swim for Life will occur on September 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Boatslip Resort. To find out more about Swim for Life, go to www.swim4life.org. The Boatslip Resort is located at 161 Commercial Street.
