Pet Parades and More

At the Annual Pet Appreciation Weekend

September 11th, 2008

Let the games begin . . . canine games, that is. And feline photo shoots, and tea dances for the cats and dogs, because it is time again for the very fun and very zany Pet Appreciation Weekend in Provincetown, which will take place from Sept. 26 to 28.

Events during the weekend benefit the Carrie A. Seaman Animal Shelter in Provincetown.

Sponsored by the Carrie A. Seaman Animal Shelter (CASAS), Pet Appreciation Weekend is a busy three-day affair, with many benefits, dances and other fun events. The weekend is meant to provide fun ways to show appreciation for our animal friends, while also raising money for an organization – CASAS – that helps animals without homes.

This year the annual Canine Games, complete with an agility playground, will take place on Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be a “Fabulous Feline Photo Contest” at the same time and, later in the day, a Pet Tea Dance at the Boatslip Resort.

And, after the pets have retired for the day, the beats will turn to rock n’ roll, with the Grab Brothers Band performing at the Vixen.

The real highlight of the weekend – for the pets and the people – will occur on Sept. 28, when the annual Blessing of the Animals takes place at St. Mary’s of the Harbor Church, followed by the fabulous Pet Parade down Commercial Street. The parade will end at the Pied Bar, with a raffle party and prizes for the best walkers.

CASAS is named after Carrie Seaman, a late Provincetown resident known for her compassion for homeless animals. Seaman helped found the Provincetown Animal Shelter and left money for a permanent animal shelter in her will.

Since then CASAS has run various animal service programs, from adoption to reduced-rate spay and neuter programs. In 2005, CASAS was also able to purchase a single-family home in Provincetown, which the organization has transformed into a no-kill shelter servicing the Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet areas.
