Ride over the bridge
Notes form Land’s End–June 3rd
Cycling for a Cause
By Laura Shabott

June 5th, 2009
It takes everything I’ve got to get on a bicycle. One hour in Beau Harrell’s spin class is a victory, so my hat is off to the thousands of cyclists each year who get on that bike for a cause and pedal to raise money. The 2009 By the Sea Bike Trek, Pan-Mass Challenge and Harbor to the Bay take place this Saturday, June 6th, Saturday/Sunday, August 1st/2nd and Saturday, September 12th respectively.
 | These events are the essence of how we embrace our humanity; to turn pain into a reason to give to others. |

A great training ride and a local venue to get out and experience those bike trails is the By the Sea Bike Trek for HOW, Helping our Women, “a resource center for women with chronic, life threatening and/or disabling illness serving Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet [and] Eastham”. The three different rides are 10, 20 or 30 miles through the newly refurbished bike trails, compliments of the National Seashore. Teri Nezbeth, event coordinator, is available by telephone, 508-487-4357, email at info@helpingourwomen.org or join her bright and early with Miss Richfield 1981 at the Bas Relief 7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6th (June 7 rain date) with your bike, helmet and spare tire to raise $100.00 for this important Provincetown based cause.
“To reap the rewards, you have to do the work." is the Zen saying PMC Founder and Executive Director Billy Starr lives by. His efforts to combat cancer, a disease that had claimed his mother, his uncle and cousin, began on the Appalachian Trail and are now the single most successful athletic fundraising in the United States. Fellow spinner and town resident Darla Woodwood is taking on the Pan-Mass Challenge August1st and 2nd. She is one of 5000 people, most of whom will do the grueling 192 mile 2 day route from Sturbridge to Provincetown out of a need to give back. Darla, aka “Dee” was inspired to go for it when she saw the bikers arrive from last year’s challenge. To see her story and other participant’s inspirations, go to www.pmc.org., and then go to pmc profiles.

One man can make a difference and that is so evident in the story of Michael Tye, whose vision of a world without HIV/AIDS was cut short by his untimely death. Brother Mark Tye and Boston friends such as Frank Ribaudo of Club Café created Harbor to the Bay in his honor. There are three different routes to choose on Saturday September 12th, with two ending in Provincetown at the Provincetown Inn and an awards dinner and dance at the Boatslip Resort at 7pm.
These events are the essence of how we embrace our humanity; to turn pain into a reason to give to others, to transform despair into hope through the gift of one’s time, physical ability or money for the betterment of all.
