Get Ready for Bear Sightings

At the Annual Provincetown Bear Week

July 4th, 2009

Provincetown’s comedians love to make fun of the town’s special theme weeks. Bear Week, especially is a favorite target – the name is just too irresistible. But it’s also a measure of how much the town, and its performers, love the bears. They are favorite annual guests, and the town always lays out a large welcome mat for them.

Other special events next weekend include a “Wet Dry Paint-Off Auction” to benefit the library, a Secret Garden Tour, and opening night for the play ''Take Me Out.''

This year Provincetown’s Bear Week will take place between July 11 and 18, and there is a full roster of events on the schedule to keep these hirsute darlings happy.

Organized by the Provincetown Bears, the weeklong event always attracts a wide variety of men. Muscle bound or heavyset, the lushly haired and the more bare, often fully bearded, sometimes bedecked in leather and always manly, bears of all sizes and types are welcome.

Highlights for the week include the “Woof on the Wharf” welcome party at the Boatslip Resort, and dance parties at the A-House, Club Purgatory, and The Crown’s Paramount Nightclub. Favorite Provincetown performer Miss Richfield 1981 also offers a special Bear show. The Crown unleashes its leather bar for a “Vault at Large” party and hosts the annual Firemen’s Ball. And the seashore beckons for biking, clam bakes, dune walks and more.

Other special events next weekend include a “Wet Dry Paint-Off Auction” on July 11 to benefit the Provincetown Public Library, which is a popular hangout for visitors and residents alike. For the event, artists’ renderings of the library will be auctioned, with those completed beforehand for sale starting at 10 a.m. and those still wet from being painted that very day selling at 5 p.m.

Also of note is the Provincetown Art Association and Museum’s annual Secret Garden Tour on July 12, which offers participants a sneak peek of some of the town’s most beautiful private gardens. Concurrent with the tour, there is also an exhibit of garden artworks at the museum.

And for theater lovers, check out the Counter Productions theater troupe’s production of “Take Me Out,” a play by Richard Greenberg opening July 8 at the Provincetown Theater.
