Celebrating Family's Many Forms
At Provincetown's Family Week from August 1 to 8
July 26th, 2009
Family gets celebrated in a lot of American discourse, but far too often it’s so narrowly defined that it excludes many of the real families that exist in this country.
 | Also taking place next weekend is the Pan Mass Challenge bike ride, where more than 5,000 cyclists and 3,000 volunteers hope to raise $30 million for cancer research. |

In such a setting, events along the lines of Provincetown’s Family Week, which will take place this year from August 1 to 8, are especially important.
Two gay dads founded Family Week with a backyard barbecue back in 1996. Since then, the event has developed into the largest national gathering of LGBT families and their friends in the nation.
With a robust schedule of events, the event gives LGBT families an opportunity to celebrate their experiences in a week of fun on the Outer Cape.
This year families attending Family Week can look forward to poolside picnics, beach games, workshops and more.
Highlights for 2009 include a pride parade on August 3, stargazing and s’mores at a beach campfire on August 4, a clambake on August 6 and a family dance on August 7. Star comedian Kate Clinton will also be performing a special show for Family Week at The Crown and Anchor on August 5.
Meanwhile, the days are marked by a full schedule of workshops organized by the Family Equality Council. Parents will meet throughout the week to discuss single parenting, adoption, working with schools, gender roles, financial planning and more. There will also be activities for the kids, and special events for families with Guatemalan and Asian children.
Also taking place next weekend is the Pan Mass Challenge bike ride, where more than 5,000 cyclists and 3,000 volunteers hope to raise $30 million for cancer research.
The event, which offers a variety of bike routes ending in Provincetown, takes place on August 1 and 2. Since its start in 1980, participants have raised close to $240 million for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
