Notes from Land's End: Oct. 30
Winterizing My Life: Part Two
By Laura Shabott
October 30th, 2009
It’s here. Winter has arrived on the Outer Cape with howling winds and rainy skies. What a wonderful time to awaken sweet, secret dreams. I don’t mean the kinky kind, since there’s no reason to hide those in Provincetown. I mean the creative kind, that urge to cook or make art or sew. From now till March, there is plenty of time to do it. So, please join me in a tour of places to discover your creative self!
 | So, you went to art school and your life as a waiter, chef or bartender consumed the last number of years. It happens. |

When a sewing machine came into my home, it was time to bring out my memory quilt, seven years in the making. At last, it’s ready to be finished! So, I took the half completed project to Murray’s Fabrics in Orleans. While we picked out material, Donna told me all about her classes and open sews. If your daughter or son (think Armani) has a hankering to make clothes or costumes, this resourceful woman will teach them the basics. Maybe you want to be the next Coco Chanel, Donna will help you with your own creations during her Open Sew. Quilting classes round out the ways to learn the ancient and meditative act of sewing.
So, you went to art school and your life as a waiter, chef or bartender consumed the last number of years. It happens. Well, this is your year to march over to The Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. They are offering cooperatives in Pottery and Printmaking, two very hard mediums to do at home. Room monitors are available to lend a hand with the wheels and presses. If you have prior experience, this is an extraordinary opportunity to flex those creative muscles in a beautiful environment

Cooking during the winter months has become a joy in recent years. Maybe it’s my age, but who cares? Eating well is certainly an art form! Surprisingly, Seashore Point holds a bi-monthly free cooking demonstration with samples from different culinary professionals. Richard Johnson, the charming chef for their dining room, taught us his secret recipe for Teriyaki Sauce in a very cozy setting. The staff is friendly and it is a resource of free events for people of all ages. Friday, November 20th, they will have a lecture on “Pursuing Your Artistic Passion When You Finally Have Time!” at 7:30.
Now, how great is that?
