The E-Z Guide to New Year’s Resolutions

January 3rd, 2010

Janus (53BC) was a Roman mythical king with two faces, one that looked into the past and another that looked to the future. Over time, his forward face became the New Year’s poster child for resolutions. Who needs the burden of making impossible promises after the holidays made us fat and broke? The citizens of Provincetown and the people who love them deserve a new set of rules for making resolutions. Here is my E-Z Guide to winning in the New Year.

Who needs the burden of making impossible promises after the holidays made us fat and broke?

Do more of what you already do! Here are some of mine:

On New Years Day, I will cheer on the spirited people who swim in the ocean behind the Old Colony from my warm car on the pier.

I will eat and drink more. There are great discount nights like Italian Sundays for $14.95 at Crowne Pointe or buy one entrée and get one free Wednesdays. And in the lean weeks, the soup kitchen starts at 12:30pm with seconds at 1:15pm. Plus, I can always eat more vegetables and drink more water, right?

When I step on the scale during my physical at Outer Cape Health, I will close my eyes. Whew, that was easy.

My size eight clothes will go back to Ruthies.

As I drive by Mussel Beach or the Provincetown Gym on my way to the soup kitchen, I will wave.

I will smile more; nature’s easiest way to get a face lift.

From years of service in Provincetown’s tourism industry, my inner bitch is lonely. I will let her out when people get in my face.

I will take a contractor bag, sweep the paper piles on my desk into it and dump it in the trash. Now, that’s organized.

The conceptualist Jay Chritchley’s annual RE-ROOTERS DAY CEREMONY, is Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 4pm at Cape Inn sand flats, Provincetown Harbor. I will go.
