Pollywood: Making film and television on the Outer Cape

January 30th, 2010

My partner says, “Let’s do something exciting.” I say, “At 3pm on a Tuesday in January? What? Play pool? Go to the gym? Eat?” He said: “No! Let’s do something different.” Off we go to see a 4:00pm showing of “Avatar” at the Wellfleet Cinema’s $5.75 discount Tuesdays. What a wonderful way to spend a few hours!

Inspired, I scouted around to see who is creating film and television in Provincetown.

Inspired, I scouted around to see who is creating film and television in Provincetown. One standout film in PIFF (Provincetown International Film Festival) 2009 is Joseph Montegna’s documentary “Ptown Diaries”. Beautifully shot, the gaycentric documentary also encompassed the fishing history and art heavyweights Michael Cunningham, Norman Mailer and Anne Packard. Featured on Logo, it is a smash hit great piece of work. If you haven’t seen it, just do it!

“Terrestrial Extras” by screenwriter Jim O’Connell in collaboration with New York filmmaker Jake Fink has landed in Provincetown. A 30 minute journey into the paranormal, the protagonist has miraculous contact with aliens. In production right now, the team needs background actors (extras) for the next couple of weeks. I will be in a supporting role along with the fabulous Braunwyn Krist Jackett and swarthy Mark Meehan as the leads. Contact Jim at alienjwo@yahoo.com to be in the movies!

Due to governmental overregulation, the Provincetown day boat fisherman is close to extinction. Recording this complex relationship between science, government and commercial fishing is the daunting mission of Mary Beth de Poutiloff. A commercial fisherman herself, she is on the front lines of the issues that threaten her family’s ability to earn a living. Mary’s work in progress, a television series in collaboration with PTV (Provincetown Community Television) will address fishing in the past, present and future. Committees are forming now to support the project. Contact Mary at muddog@midmaine.com to get involved.

There are great opportunities to make film or television right here in Provincetown. How great is that?
