Lusty Liberty

Notes from Land's End: Aug. 9

August 10th, 2010

Thousands of visitors came to celebrate the 100th year of the Provincetown Pilgrim Monument this past Thursday, August 5th. A spirited parade kicked off the festivities with marching bands, a great townie dance number and Miss Ritchfield 1981 as a lobster. Confetti burst out of the Monumental Birthday Cake with candles created by local artists. Finished in 1910, President Taft laid the cornerstone of the Pilgrim Monument as a symbol of all that is good about our country. 100 years later, 350 feet above sea level, our homage to the Mayflower’s landing still represents those ideals.

Let’s give one hundred cudos to PMPM’s executive director Jim Bakker for this outstanding event.

Stormy weather held off as Provincetown welcomed scores of public officials, 200 Boston Masons and Governor Deval Patrick to the rededication. The audience stood for a glorious rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” sung by Suede, followed by the Outer Cape Choral a cappella original “A Trip to Provincetown.” WBZTV news anchor Lisa Hughes was a wonderful mistress of ceremonies as she introduced the day’s speakers.

Plymouth’s Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes opened his heartfelt speech with “We [in Plymouth] are aware that the pilgrims landed here first.” The crowd roared. The Reverend said that Provincetown embodies “lusty liberty” while Plymouth is a place of “sturdy and steady virtues”, both a part of the Pilgrim soul. He ended with “You got your monument and we got our rock and announced the 400th birthday of Plymouth 2020.

Joe Kennedy III, representing his family, said that this monument is “an Italian tower built by Irish immigrants for a Portuguese fishing village to honor British dissidents from a Dutch port. He spoke of his family’s love of Cape Cod and Provincetown’s well of inspiration for countless artists and visitors.

Governor Deval urged the group to remember their “generational responsibility” to uphold the values of liberty and courage that the Provincetown Pilgrim Monument represents.

Rain held off until suppertime and magically disappeared for spectacular fireworks ending one blast of a birthday party.

Let’s give one hundred cudos to PMPM’s executive director Jim Bakker for this outstanding event.
