You Don't Want to Miss ...

Notes from Land's End: May 23

May 23rd, 2012

This Friday shifts Provincetown into high gear with Memorial Day Weekend. As we become a summer resort once again, new hires gather with year-round locals in training sessions at all the restaurants and stores. Commercial Street has the hum of power tools mixing with the squealing brakes of a bicycle barely missing a delivery truck as the population swells ten-fold.

People always ask me, “What is the best weekend to come to Provincetown?” and I say, “Anytime that you can get here!”

Memorial Day Weekend: Thursday, May 24th to Monday, May 28th

There’s still room to join the red-cup brigade for Provincetown’s word of mouth celebration for women. Join the masses of young ladies who return annually to dance, cruise and have a “girlz-gone-wild” weekend by the pools. There’s still room at the inn so don’t cry, young lasses. Get your cooler, baseball cap, tag football equipment and come on down.

International Encaustic Conference Gallery Crawl, Friday, June 1st to Friday, June 8th

Twelve galleries in Provincetown and two venues in Truro will have exhibitions from artists participating in The International Encaustic Conference. It begins over at Shank Painter Road and Bradford, with stops at Gallery Ehva and Art Current, and then over to Commercial St. to A Gallery (192) and then to the East End, with stops at Julie Heller, Bowersock, Ernden, Alden, Rice Polak, Kobalt, Charles-Baltivik, PAAM, and Schoolhouse (in cooperation with ArtStrand).

Encaustic, a form of paint made with beeswax, is enjoying an artistic resurgence, with a following of 250 conference participants from 35 states and many countries. For more information, go to Director Joanne Mattera’s blog.

Tennessee William Gala, PAAM, Saturday, June 2nd

The Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival will announce the program for this year’s theme, Tennessee Williams and Music, at its first gala fundraising dinner. Guests will be treated to a sneak preview of one of this year’s productions, “Autumn Song,” an exclusive auction/exhibition of white-line woodcuts by Bill Evaul, with a special appearance by entertainer Zoe Lewis. The evening begins with cocktails, then a divine dinner and entertainment. As of this posting, there are only four tables left. For more information, go to www.twptown.org

Vets Fish Ptown, MacMillan Pier, Saturday, June 9th,

In its fifth year, Vets Fish P-town brings members of our armed forces and their families together for a day of recreational boating around Provincetown Harbor. Director Joy Reis, with scores of volunteers and donors, create a day of events where Provincetown maritime residents give back to our United States military. To donate time, a boat, money or to find out more, please go to www.vetsfishptown.com.

Where else in the world would groups of exuberant women, encaustic painters, US veterans and Tennessee Williams buffs all feel at home? No where!

“Notes from Lands End”, by artistic bon vivant Laura Shabott, is a weekly account of the people, places and events that make our town so special.
