Notes from Land's End: July 31
By Laura Shabott
July 31st, 2012
Provincetown is home to a large number of annual fundraisers that empower artists, support a festival or provide funds for AIDS research and patient services. Four very different events in July had the same common denominator – an outpouring of generosity within a celebration.

The Community Research Initiative of New England holds a delightful fundraiser every year at the Red Inn. CRI’s mission is to lead the way in clinical HIV/AIDS research and to ensure access to lifesaving drugs to those in need.
Hosts and donors Doug Dolezal and Greg Welch said that “the time and money has had such a significant impact. There are guests here today that are alive because of CRI. Their research has made the world a better place.” A silent art auction included extraordinary works by Lauren Ewing, Oren Sherman and TJ Walton, among others. A large crowd listened to jazz, wined, dined and drank in the view of the harbor while giving to a great cause.

The Fine Arts Work Center honored Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and the Walker family, with Berta (Berta Walker Gallery) and Hatty Walker Fitts (Co-Chair of the FAWC Board of Trustees) in attendance at their annual dinner, silent auction, ceremony and dance.
Executive Director Margaret Murphy said, "This year's Summer Awards Celebration was a fabulously successful event, with a sell-out crowd and honorees of the highest regard. The Fine Arts Work Center continues to be a world-renowned magnet for emerging artists and writers because of support like this from our friends and donors."
“Dan Mullin (FAWC Trustee and Event Co-Chair) is such a wonderful host and I had a great time,” said honoree Berta Walker.
Adam Weinstock of Creative Concept Productions brought Lisa Lampanelli to Provincetown’s Town Hall for two benefit performances in support of the Tennessee Williams Festival held every September, this year the 20th through the 23rd.
Festival Director Jef Hall-Flavin said, "Audiences turned out to see a groundbreaking comic who is unafraid to take on hot-button issues. What people forget about Tennessee Williams is that - in his day - he broke new ground as well. His work tackled issues of sexuality, race and other taboos, paving the way for a cultural landscape where comics like Lisa Lampanelli can thrive."
At 7:00 a.m. on a Sunday(!), participants of the ASGCC 5K Run/Walk were registering at the Harbor Hotel. Dick Clifford, manager of our very busy Stop & Shop, brought his sister and brother-in-law for this spirited event. “I like to run especially for a good cause,” Dick said. They sprinted down Commercial Street, out to the end of MacMillan Pier and then continued west to the Provincetown Inn – the finish line.
The AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, one of the first AIDS organizations established in the United States, works to foster health, independence and dignity for people living with HIV/AIDS and Viral Hepatitis by providing care, support and housing.
A mix of sand, surf and gracious giving make Provincetown the perfect place to have a lot of fun while supporting a cause.
