Holiday Art Auction
Outer Cape Auctions on Dec. 30 at Town Hall
By Kahrin Deines
December 24th, 2007
If you’re a collector of American art, then you’ve probably heard of Provincetown, a tiny town at the end of Cape Cod that began earning national notoriety as a vibrant artists’ colony at the start of the twentieth century.
 | The Holiday Auction will take place on Dec. 30 at Town Hall. |
|
You may not know, however, about Outer Cape Auctions, an auction house that has been around since 1999 and specializes in representing artists from the Cape Cod area and, in particular, from Provincetown.
Since its foundation, the auction house has generated financial support for many area artists and connected numerous buyers with Provincetown art.
The auction house presents artwork from both the past and present, offering in one setting artwork by late greats, such as Charles W. Hawthorne, along with works by active contemporary Cape artists. Usually the estimated value of the featured artworks also has quite a span – from fifty dollars up to the thousands – so many different kinds of art patrons can participate.
At the auction house’s Annual Holiday Auction, which will occur on December 30 at Provincetown Town Hall, just such a mix of artworks will be available.
There will be a number of lots of work by contemporary artists, including Hilda Neily, John Foley, Polly Burnell and Cynthia Packard, among others. Meanwhile, many works by late artists who lived or worked on the Outer Cape will also be featured, including works by Albert Edel, John Hare, and Gerrit Hondius.
A variety of mediums is also represented in the auction’s selection, from lithographs to etchings and oils.
The Holiday Auction will occur on December 30 at 4 p.m. at Provincetown Town Hall, which is located at 230 Commercial Street. A preview of the auction’s lots will begin on the same day at 2 p.m. Featured artworks can also be previewed online at www.outercapeauctions.com. Bidding can be done in person or by phone.
