Mary Oliver Reads
At a Benefit for the New Provincetown Players
By Kahrin Deines
December 24th, 2007
It’s not just visual artists who are drawn to the tip of the Cape by the area’s powerful beauty. Writers, from Eugene O’Neill to Stanley Kunitz, have also found inspiration for their words along its isolated shores.

One such writer, the poet Mary Oliver, will give a special reading at the Provincetown Theater on Dec. 29 between 4 and 5 p.m.
The reading is a benefit for the New Provincetown Players and will support the Player’s upcoming Spring Playwrights’ Festival.
Mary Oliver has lived in Provincetown for many years and much of her work reflects a deep relationship with and understanding of the Outer Cape’s special natural beauty.
Shore birds, humpback whales, wetlands – these and other Cape entities make frequent appearances in her poems.
Mary Oliver won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for her 1984 collection “American Primitive.” She has also won many other awards, including the National Book Award and the Lannan Literary Award.
Her most recent work includes “Our World,” with photographs by her late partner Mary Mallone Cook, and her 2006 collection “Thirst.”
The New Provincetown Players is a theater company that was formed in 2005 when Provincetown’s professional and community theater groups joined forces. The company is named after the famous Provincetown Players, the theatre troupe that was the first to perform Eugene O’Neill’s plays.
Mary Oliver will read on Dec. 29 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Provincetown Theater, which is located at 238 Bradford Street. Tickets are available for $25 through PtownTix at www.ptowntix.com or by calling 508.487.7487. Early reservations are recommended as readings by Mary Oliver are always well-attended.
