Readings and Exhibits Galore in March

February 25th, 2008

You might think March is a slow month in Provincetown. If so it’s time somebody sent you to the Fine Arts Work Center, where a group of 20 fellows, along with a handful of visiting artists, are presenting a nonstop lineup of readings and exhibits for visitors to enjoy over the next month.

The Fine Arts Work Center's winter fellows and visiting artists are keeping the center's arts schedule full as can be in March.

Starting out the month is an exhibit of works by Minako Shirakura, who is one of the center’s 10 visual arts fellows this winter. Shirakura’s work will be on display from Feb. 29 to Mar. 6. The next week the center’s gallery space will go to Robert Gutierrez, also a visual fellow, whose work blends Filipino folklore and animism within a dystopic contextual framework.

Since the center supports writers as well as visual artists, there are also a number of readings in the works as well. Two literary fellows, Pilar Gomez-Ibanez and Nadia Kalman, will present their word creations at a reading on Mar. 1.

Meanwhile, three visiting writers will also present readings at the center during March.

Andrew Hudgins will give a reading on Mar. 15. Hudgins, a FAWC fellow in the 1980s, has published five books of poetry and numerous literary essays. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2004 and has held many other fellowships as well. His book “The Never-Ending” was a finalist for the 1991 National Book Award.

Poet Maurice Manning and novelist Melanie Sumner will also visit the Fine Arts Work Center to give readings on Mar. 22. Manning has published three books of poetry, including “A Companion for Owls,” which was written in the voice of Daniel Boone. Sumner is the author of two novels and many short stories. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine and the New York Times.

Three more exhibits will also be on display during March at the center. Visual fellow Christy Georg will show her “kinetic sculpture” starting Mar. 14. Second-year Fellow Nathalie Miebach will follow, with an exhibit between Mar. 21 and 27. And Fellow Xin Song will close the month with an exhibit opening Mar. 28.

The Fine Arts Work Center is one of Provincetown’s most energetic arts associations. It presents a year-round schedule of readings and exhibits, and hosts a world-renowned summer workshop series. The center, which was founded by a group of artists in the 60s, also supports 20 emerging artists at the start of their careers with a 6-month fellowship every year.
