Cuba Comes to Town
Presenting Nilo Cruz's ''Anna in the Tropics''
By Kahrin Deines
March 3rd, 2008
Cuba is back in the news big time. After President Fidel Castro announced his resignation, stories about our neighbor have surged in the news media.
 | “Anna in the Tropics” won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2004. |

But Cuban culture has always been worth of our attention, not just because of its proximity. And the next play in Counter Productions’ winter theater series – “Anna in the Tropics” – brings a strong sampling of it to the Outer Cape.
Written by Nilo Cruz, a Cuban by birth, the play is set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in Florida. Along with hand-rolled cigars made in the factory, however, the Cuban immigrants brought with them another tradition: the tradition of the lectern, who speaks and reads to the workers as they roll.
In the play, a new lectern arrives on the scene and begins to read from Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, spurring a surge of emotions among his listeners.
Within this plot line, the play examines both the mechanization of human industry and the influence of Russian culture on Cuban life.
“Anna in the Tropics” won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2004.
Counter Productions will present the play at the Provincetown Theater between March 27 and April 6. It will run Thursday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
