A Punchinello painting by Patrick Webb.
Clown Gets Serious Play
Through an Exhibit of Patrick Webb's Paintings
By Kahrin Deines
March 16th, 2008
Punchinello the clown will soon be visiting the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. In a series of paintings, of course.
 | The exhibit features work from Patrick Webb's 25-year career, and will be on display until May 18. |
|
He will be there in all his tragic-comic glory through an exhibit of work by the painter Patrick Webb that is on display until May 18.
Webb began painting Punchinello in the early ‘90s. He first encountered the famous Punchinello in the Venice frescoes of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, and he has since become the main protagonist in his paintings.
 | The famous clown Punchinello is tragi-comic in Webb's paintings. |
|
“He was particular, but also general. He could be repeated. In Punchinello, I found an Everyman who, in my paintings, is Everygay man,” Webb says.
Through Punchinello, Webb found a way to explore and dramatize his own personal experiences on canvas in a manner that captures the pathos and comedy of life.
Punchinello has also taken a slightly different form from his classic representation in Webb’s paintings, where he has lost his hump and grown slimmer.
Webb’s paintings are also known for their powerful representation of space, as he uses settings from his two homes – Provincetown and New York – to examine the psychological effects of different surroundings, from the beauty of the sea to the crowded streets of the city and the intimacy of private rooms.
The exhibit, “Patrick Webb: 25 years of Work,” includes work from his entire career. A number of Webb’s early seascapes are featured, along with his large streetscapes and works from his narrative series about Punchinello.
A color catalogue of the exhibit is also available at the Museum Store.
