Plein Air Painting Passed Along

Margery Ryerson and Ellen Whyel Carroll at PAAM

April 20th, 2008

It’s been over a century since people began to call Provincetown an arts colony, and many artists have left their imprint in that time.

Ellen Whyel Carroll worked in oils and watercolors to create works that often reflected the coal mining terrain of her childhood.

But it began with Charles W. Hawthorne, who started an open-air painting school in Provincetown at the close of the 19th century.

His school, and the artists that it drew to land’s end, led the Boston Globe to proclaim Provincetown the largest art colony in America in 1916.

Among his many students, were Margery Ryerson and Ellen Whyel Carroll, whose work will be on display at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum until June 8.

Ryerson took classes at Hawthorne’s school from 1911 to 1920, in the winters working at a childcare facility. Her art began to reflect her winter work, and she became known for her portraits of infants and adolescents. She also studied at Robert Henri’s Art Students League, and was exhibited at the Paris Salon and throughout the United States, before passing at the age of 102.

Carroll, meanwhile, was the daughter of a coal magnate in Pennsylvania and her work often illustrated the coal mining terrain of her background. She worked in both oils and watercolors, and created marionettes.

Since 1914, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum has been building a collection of works by Outer Cape artist like Ryerson and Carroll.
