It Began with a Paint Smudge

Linda Singer's Collages at Spiritus Pizza

May 4th, 2008

Collage is an art form of many pieces somehow rallied together to create a thought. And, at its best, both the pieces and the thought are visible to the mind’s eye, as the collage artist leads the viewer into a mental process of their own.

“Even when I went to sleep, I continued to imagine and map out collage ideas in my dreams.”

For just as the collage artist must jump from cut to cut, and cut to paste, collages can map a starting point from which the mind can leap.

Such is the case with Linda Singer’s vibrant and intricate collages, which will be on display at Spiritus Pizza from May 8 to 21.

It is a game of working with found stimuli, and creating meaningful associations from them.

“It all flows though me,” Singer said. “The collages started this winter with a smudge of paint on an envelope. There seemed to be an image in the smudge, so I coupled I with other found cut images and my own painted imagery and drawing. I got so caught up in the effects that I could not stop creating the collages.”

“Even when I went to sleep, I continued to imagine and map out collage ideas in my dreams.”

All of the collages have been executed in a small format, measuring about 7 inches by 5 inches, but they are filled with associations and look almost painterly in their execution.

“I loved overlaying with paint and paper and printing,” Singer said. “Over 70 of these collages have become ‘my babies’ in just months.”

Singer, an artist and teacher, has experimented with many mediums over the years, including murals, painting and printmaking.

There will be an opening reception for Singer’s work at Spiritus Pizza on May 8 at 7 p.m.
