A raku work by Jim Brunelle.
Raku, Wine and Cheese
At Castle Hill's Annual Extravaganza
By Kahrin Deines
May 15th, 2008
Mix together pine needles, sawdust, seaweed and heat. Add pre-formed clay. And you have an evening of entertainment.
 | The “Night of Fire” is part of Castle Hill’s 2008 Raku Extravaganza, Pottery Sale and Print Show, which will take place on May 24 and 25 in Truro. |
|
Such will be the case during Castle Hill’s upcoming “Night of Fire,” when a raku kiln will be put into action for a dramatic presentation of the firing process. Raku pottery must be withdrawn from the kiln while it is still glowing with heat, which makes for a stunning visual spectacle, especially at night.

At the “Night of Fire,” wine and cheese will also be served, and artists participating in the Extravaganza will be in attendance to talk about their work.
The Extravaganza’s Pottery Sale will take place on both May 24 and 25. Numerous artists will be presenting work for sale, including Doris Hanford, Ken Parsons, Diane Heart, Lois Hirshberg, Gay Smith and many others, including members of the Cape Cod Potters and Castle Hill faculty.
Meanwhile, there will also be a Print Show on May 24 at Castle Hill’s Pamet Crossing location. For the Print Show, artists from the Printmakers of Cape Cod will demonstrate printmaking techniques and show their work.
The Printmakers of Cape Cod is a group of artists from all over the Cape that sponsor exhibits, workshops and other events. For 2008, the Printmakers of Cape Cod have organized a series of exhibits at Cape locations called “The Printmakers Trail.”
Castle Hill is an arts center that offers classes, workshops and cooperative workspace areas for artists of all levels and ages. Castle Hill also presents lectures and exhibits in collaboration with visiting and local artists and writers.
Castle Hill is located at 10 Meeting House Road in Truro. To find out more about the Raku Extravaganza, call 508.349.7511. To find out more about Castle Hill’s other events and programs, visit www.castlehill.org.
