Three Exhibits at PAAM
Harvey Dodd, Joyce Johnson and More
By Kahrin Deines
May 19th, 2008
Everything’s shifting in Provincetown – the light is changing, the businesses are extending their hours and everyone is preparing to receive another summer season of visitors, including the galleries, many of which are hanging new shows for the month of June.

Ever in stride with the times and the seasons, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum opened three new exhibits on May 23.
An anniversary exhibit celebrating Harvey Dodd’s work is currently on diplay. Dodd has been painting in Provincetown for 50 years, first coming to the area with his family in the late ‘50s. In 1971 he opened his own gallery on Commercial Street, and his paintings are now held in many private and public collections. The exhibit will feature watercolors and pastels from all stages of Dodd’s career.

Meanwhile, Joyce Johnson, another longtime Cape artist, is being celebrated in a second exhibit. Johnson came to Cape Cod in the 1960s and founded the Nauset School of Sculpture in Eastham, which eventually evolved into the Truro Center for the Arts. She works with clay, wood and bronze to create abstract sculptures and reliefs that reflect the natural world.
There is also an exhibit of work by Romanos Rizk, who first came to Provincetown in 1948 to study with Henry Hensche. Risk painted in the Cape impressionistic style for many years and then developed his own style of abstraction based on the Zen philosophy “One with the Tao.”
