Spring Playwrights' Festival

Six Plays in 60+ Minutes and Wendy Kesselman

May 19th, 2008

Summer in Provincetown is about to begin and you can bet there will be some drama. Why not, then, warm up for it by taking in some drama of a higher quality at Provincetown’s Spring Playwrights’ Festival?

During the second two weeks of the Playwrights' Festival, the Players will stage Wendy Kesselman's play ''The Notebook.''

The Playwrights’ Festival, which is hosted by the New Provincetown Players, will open the weekend of May 30.

The festival will get off to a running start with the staging of six plays in just over 60 minutes. The six plays were selected out of more than 135 submissions from all across the country, and run across a wide range of topics, from con jobs gone awry to culinary scams, dating, healing and more.

The winning playwrights represent a broad mix as well, hailing from states including Missouri, Washington and Vermont, among others. They are Meryl Cohn, Jerry Thompson, Joan Lipkin, George Sauer, Barbara Lindsay and John Kern.

The Playwrights’ Festival will continue into the next two weekends with a production of Wendy Kesselman’s play “The Notebook.” Kesselman, who lives on Cape Cod, is an acclaimed playwright and screenwriter. She wrote the screen adaptation of John Knowles novel “A Separate Peace” for the 2002 film, as well as other screenplays. She has also written more than a dozen plays, and is a recipient of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

Her new play “The Notebook” follows two passionate literature students at a private school in Manhattan, and their relationship with each other and the school’s fabled English teacher, Miss Thorne.

Kesselman will engage in a talk-back with the audience at the May 31 performance of her play.

The “Six Plays in 60+ Minutes” will be staged at the Provincetown Theater May 29 to June 1. Wendy Kesselman’s play “The Notebook” will run from June 5 to June 8, and from June 12 to June 15.
