Barn Raising Bash

A Party to Finish Castle Hill's Antique Barn

July 15th, 2008

It’s a barn raising folks, which means there will be jazz, there will be martinis, there will be dancing and there will be artists.

For the Barn Raising Bash, Big Jazz will be performing, Ray and Lee Elman will be mixing the martinis, and Ptown Parties will be serving food.

That’s because it’s a “Not Your Average Barn Raising Bash,” scheduled to take place on July 19 at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill.

A year ago, Castle Hill launched an effort to restore its antique barn that dates back to 1882. Much like barns were once used to store hay and house farm animals, Castle Hill’s historic barn functions as a store of creativity for members of the Outer Cape community. And just as barn raising once brought communities together, Castle Hill’s annual Summer Bash is an opportunity for art lovers to come together in support of an organization that has been providing arts education for 37 years.

For the Barn Raising Bash, Big Jazz will be performing, Ray and Lee Elman will be mixing the martinis, and Ptown Parties will be serving food.

Castle Hill’s Center for the Arts offers workshops in painting, clay, writing and other mediums of expression in its barn year round. It also frequently hosts exhibits, readings, concerts and other arts events, in addition to operating print and ceramic cooperatives. In particular, Castle Hill is unique in its effort to offer arts instruction for all ages and all levels.

Castle Hill has completed part of its barn renovation over the last year, but much work still needs to be done. The proceeds from the party will help the organization finish the task of restoration.

In addition to the Barn Raising Bash, a number of other events are on the Castle Hill schedule for summer 2008. On August 24, the arts center will host a Modernist House Tour, and exhibits will be on view at the barn throughout the summer.

The center will also host a lecture by the renowned artist, feminist and intellectual Judy Chicago on August 20, as well as workshops taught by Mary Frank, Dorianne Laux and Michael Burbank over the month of August.

Don’t miss this event – it is, after all, “not your average barn raising,” and you will be supporting the continued vibrancy of art on the Outer Cape. Tickets cost $40, and the party will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. To find out more about Castle Hill, visit www.castlehill.org.
