The Wild Party
Andrew Lippa's Musical at the Provincetown Theater
By Kahrin Deines
July 15th, 2008
Provincetown was once so notorious for its wild goings on that its neighbors dubbed it Hell Town. That was way back, of course, but the town is still well known for its wild energy today and Commercial Street can seem like one huge party all summer long.
 | Presented by CTEK Arts, “The Wild Party” is running Wednesday through Sunday until August 10. |

It’s only fitting then that the Provincetown Theater is staging Andrew Lippa’s musical “The Wild Party.”
Set in the roaring ‘20s, the musical is about a party in Manhattan that goes wildly awry. Thrown by two vaudeville entertainers, the party brings together an unusual cast of characters, including a prizefighter and a lesbian madam. As drugs and machinations run the evening off track, the plot tilts to the outrageous, and the party unravels into debauchery and death.
Presented by CTEK Arts, “The Wild Party” is running Wednesday through Sunday until August 10. Bart Murell, a choreographer who has worked on Broadway, is the production’s director, and John W. Thomas is in charge of musical direction.
“The Wild Party” is based on a poem written by Joseph Moncure March in the 1920s. It debuted in 1999, winning the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical.
Lippa’s score for the musical is raucously eclectic, and blends together as many different genres as the party’s varied revelers.
