The Full Monty
At the Provincetown Theater
By Kahrin Deines
August 10th, 2008
Imagine a strip club marquee reading “Unemployed Steelworkers Shed All.”
 | ''The Full Monty'' is running at the Provincetown Theater through September 3. |

It seems an unlikely advertisement, if not role reversal, but that was the plot of the hit musical “The Full Monty.” Anything can happen in theater, after all.
And in Provincetown, where it’s more common to find men shedding their clothes on stage than women, it’s a plot with perfect pitch.
Fittingly, “The Full Monty,” which garnered numerous awards after its debut in 2000, is running at the Provincetown Theater through August, with Susan Grilli directing.
The story of six out-of-work steelworkers who decide to bare it all on a local strip stage after watching their wives go gaga for a touring show, “The Full Monty” turns on a playful examination of the often neglected topics of male insecurity and camaraderie.
Out of work, and in need of a quick infusion of cash, the steelworkers must look inside to find their dignity and strength.
The musical is based on a 1997 British film of the same name, which was nominated for an Academy Award.
Terrence McNally and David Yazbeck, who wrote the score, reinterpreted the story for American stages, moving the setting from England to Buffalo, New York.
For the Provincetown production, Casey Sanderson serves as musical director.
“The Full Monty” runs at the Provincetown Theater through September 3. To find out more about show times, or to buy tickets, visit www.newprovincetownplayers.org or call 508.487.9793.
