Have Your Art by the Harbor

Paint the Town and Shakespeare on the Cape

August 24th, 2008

If you’ve spent any time in Provincetown, then you know why it’s been an arts colony for more than a century.

Shakespeare on the Cape will perform the season’s final performance of “The Tempest” on Fisherman’s Pier on Sept. 7.

It’s the harbor. And the light, and the sunsets, and the remote location, and the town’s beautiful streets. But, more than anything, it’s the harbor, which awaits at any time of day for a moment of calm and inspiration.

Two upcoming events will celebrate the beauty of Provincetown’s harbor, and the inspirational role it has played in artists’ lives for years.

On September 6, Castle Hill’s annual “Paint the Town” event, a 4-hour harbor tour with artists, will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Scheduled in conjunction with The Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta, the boat tour offers artists an opportunity to paint the town, and the schooners, while out on the water.

Artists of all levels are invited to participate, and bring their paints, easels, pastels, or cameras aboard for a day of art on the harbor’s waters.

Local guest artists also always take part in the tour, which will this year be aboard a Dolphin Fleet vessel.

The same weekend Shakespeare on the Cape will perform the season’s final performance of “The Tempest” on Fisherman’s Pier, in a staging reminiscent of the early days of the first Provincetown Players and their wharf performances in the summer of 1916.

They will also give a waterfront reading of “Macbeth” and there will be a silent auction to benefit the theater troupe.

Shakespeare on the Cape is a young theater troupe that has fast made a name for itself with innovative performances of classic works.

Tickets for the “Paint the Town” boat tour cost $20, and include lunch supplied by Ptown Parties. To RSVP for the event, call 508.349.7511. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.castlehill.org.
