It takes a community of dynamic artists and art lovers to keep something like the Provincetown Arts Association and Museum alive and strong in a town with a year-round population of little more than 3,000.

Two new exhibits at the museum, opening Sept. 26, provide a glimpse – fittingly in the form of art – of just how important the museum’s connection to its community is to it’s vitality.
One of these exhibits is dedicated solely to works of art given to the museum by Berta Walker and her family over the past 20 years. Walker, who also operates her own gallery, the Berta Walker Gallery, grew up in the Provincetown arts scene. Her father was a cofounder of the Fine Arts Work Center, and her mother a painter and dancer.

After that early introduction to art, she went on to a career in museum administration, only to eventually return to Provincetown and open her gallery, where she celebrates the work of Outer Cape artists such as Hans Hofmann, Selina Trieff, Paul Resika, Nancy Whorf and others.
The exhibit at PAAM – titled “Berta Walker – Gifts to the Collection” – features work by Varujan Boghosian, Oliver Chaffee, Carmen Cicero, Robert Henry, Blanche Lazzell, Phillip Malicoat, Bruce McKain, Ross Moffett, Erna Partoll, Sky Power, Paul Resika, Selina Trieff, Andy Warhol, Nancy Whorf, Sol Wilson, William Zorach and other artists.
Meanwhile, an exhibit opening on the same day features work by members of another important Cape arts organization, The Printmakers of Cape Cod. Since 1976, The Printmakers of Cape Cod has supported area print artists with workshops, exhibits and other events.
The exhibit will feature works by more than 100 of the group’s members, including Jack DiBenedetto, Mary Ince, Melora North, and Cyndi Walker.
“Berta Walker – Gifts to the Collection” will be on display until November 2 and “Printmakers of Cape Cod: Interpretive Images” will be on display until Nov. 9. Exhibits featuring work by Herman Marill and Vicky Tomayko are also currently on display. To find out more about the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, visit www.paam.org.
