A Karl Knaths painting that is up for auction.
A Major Fall Art Auction
With Graffiti Art, Impressionism and More
By Kahrin Deines
October 7th, 2008
People are always saying Provincetown is all about diversity – impressionism, abstract expressionism and graffiti art.
 | The Outer Cape Art Auction will take place on October 12 at the Provincetown Inn. |
|
It’s not your usual lineup for a diversity claim. But it’s Provincetown, after all, and that’s just a taste of the artwork that will be up for bidding at the next big Outer Cape Auction on October 12 at the Provincetown Inn.
The auction will take place in two parts, with the first offering abstract works, along with expressionist and modernist sculptures. Part two will feature impressionist works, defined broadly to include “people, places and things,” and 140 different lots.

Along with work by well-known Provincetown artists, such as Karl Knaths and Henry Hensche, there will also be works by two graffiti artists who made the transition into the gallery scene up for bid.
The first, a wood sign by Keith Haring discovered in New York’s subways, is valued on the low end at $15,000. The second – by Phil Frost, who started out in graffiti and now works on canvas – is a painting titled “Emalabastulmbastor.”
Other highlights include a still life by Agnes Weinrich, an early modernist, and two Hensches, one of which was created while he was still studying under Charles W. Hawthorne.
Outer Cape Auctions has been around as an auction house since 1999 and specializes in representing artists from the Cape Cod area. In addition to offering work by late great Provincetown artists, the auction house also endeavors to connect established and emerging artists with buyers.
Since its foundation, the auction house has generated more than $160,000 for area artists.
The auction will take place on October 12 at Provincetown Inn. Part one will begin at 4 p.m., and part two at 5:30 p.m. To preview the auction lots, visit www.outercapeauctions.com. Absentee bidding is possible by calling 508.487.7281 before October 10.
