Jane Chambers' play will be read on Oct. 17 and 18.
Last Summer at Bluefish Cove
A Benefit Performance with Big Stars
By Kahrin Deines
October 12th, 2008
So many events to choose from, and so little time. Or, so many women, so little time.
 | The play readings mark the inaugural debut of a new community service organization, Provincetown Cares, which plans to stage a benefit performance every year during Women’s Week and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. |

It’s safe to say that during Women’s Week both of these things will be true. But there is one event – and a star cast of five women – that you are not going to want to miss.
Erin Daniels from the “L Word” will be there. So will Michelle Clunie from “Queer as Folk” and Perrey Reeves from “Entourage.” And also Jennifer Coolidge from “Best in Show” and Darlene Van Alstryne from “Wild Party.”
They will be the cast for two staged readings of Jane Chambers’ landmark play “Last Summer at Bluefish Cove” on October 17 and 18 at the Art House.
The play readings mark the inaugural debut of a new community service organization, Provincetown Cares, which plans to stage a benefit performance every year during Women’s Week and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Money raised by the events will be used to support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment, as well as organizations that do important work on other serious health issues women face.
The play’s plot revolves around a woman who is spending her last summer with family and friends and unexpectedly falls in love. Chambers died of a brain tumor in 1983, just three years after her play debuted at The Glines First Gay American Arts Festival to rave reviews.
Along with each reading of the play, there will also be a reception with the cast and an auction of signed posters, stage props and other items, with comedian Maggie Cassella as auctioneer. Later in the evening, the event will move to the Vixen for a dance party.
The October 17 reading will take place at 8 p.m. and the October 18 reading at 4 p.m. Tickets to the play include entry to the VIP reception, which will be hosted at a private venue in the center of town that boasts a large harbor-side deck and backyard. Musical entertainment, refreshments and food will also liven the scene.
