For one night only, on November 22, the theater company will present a staged reading of Provincetown playwright Sinan Ünel’s “Pathetique.”
The play tracks between the years of 1893 and 1903, beginning with the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony Pathetique, considered by many to be his most emotionally powerful and mysterious work.
Only a few days after the premiere, Tchaikovsky himself died in mysterious circumstances.
From there the play looks to his brother and nephew, who are still struggling to endure the storm of gossip and speculation prompted by his death. Some believe the composer was condemned by a court of former schoolmates, who coerced him into taking his own life when they learned of his homosexuality.
The play, which explores the connections between art, the artist’s personal life and his audience, will star John Andert, Adam Berry, John Keller, Valerie Stanford and Max Quinn in its Provincetown staging.
Ünel’s plays have been produced in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, London, Germany and Austria. Both “Pathetique” and his 2008 work “The Cry of the Reed” were performed at the Breaking Ground Festivals presented by The Huntington Theater Company in Boston. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the New England Theater Conference’s John Gassner Memorial Award.
“Pathetique” will be performed for one night only at 7 p.m. on November 22 at the Provincetown Theater. A $10 donation is suggested at the door. To find out more, visit www.counter-productions.org. Next up, Counter Productions is staging Will Eno’s “Thom Pain (based on nothing)” from November 27 to December 7 at the Provincetown Theater.
