Notes from Lands' End: July 2nd

Secrets of the Garden

July 2nd, 2009

From the rosa rugosa wild on the dunes to the cultivated generations of roses all about town, this is a show stopping year for gardens in Provincetown.

The tour ends back at PAAM with Polly Burnell’s outstanding curatorial offering, “The Art of the Garden”.

Kicking off PAAM’s 12th Annual Secret Garden tour is a free class (with admission of $5.00 to the museum itself -) with lecturer and floral arranger Marry Garret of Flowers by Mary in Truro. Learn how to make stunning creations from your own garden starting at 3pm on Sunday, July 5th at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

On Sunday, July 12th , the tour begins at 10am with a stroll of the West End’s gardens. This year's secrets include cactus wonders, roses galore and beautiful maples. Here, in the West End, are the cottages tucked away where their history is as beautiful as the botanicals themselves. This is the part of Provincetown that hosts the Floaters, blue tiled plaques depicting homes brought over from the original settlement on Long Point in the early 1800’s.

The tour ends back at PAAM with Polly Burnell’s outstanding curatorial offering, “The Art of the Garden”. With works that span over the last 100 years, the show is like flowers themselves; delicate in nature and strong in composition. David Foley’s German Expressionistic oil on linen, “Interior with Urn” sits comfortably with Liz Carney’s richly painted oil on canvas, “Flowers with White House”. These contemporary artists stand strong with white line icon Blanche Lazzell’s “Marigolds” and master Paul Resika’s oil on linen “Roses in Mary Days’ Vase”. Burnell’s signature wit is found in her own offering, “Snake”, a majolica terra cotta sculpture. The show is a collection of great artists who have made Provincetown’s gardens their muse and inspiration.

The final garden is the grounds of the museum itself where art graces the lawns and privets themselves are crafted into waves. Join others at Mary Garret’s, “The Art of Flower Arranging” and the immensely popular Annual Secret Garden Tour by registering through the museum by telephone, in person or online. All proceeds from the events support PAAM exhibitions and education programs.

Laura Shabott is a working artist with a degree in writing, acting and painting from the School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in cooperation with Emerson College. She washed ashore in 1992 and never left (for long).
