Changing course: The Artwork of Three Women

January 25th, 2010

For local artists, actors and writers, this is THE time to get to work. If not now, in the middle of winter, when? We run into each other at the Stop and Shop, making for interesting conversations about theater productions, writers reading their work and visual artists in their studios. This is where I ran into TJ Walton, very excited about her new works. She inspired me to find other women also changing course mid career. .

For local artists, actors and writers, this is THE time to get to work. If not now, in the middle of winter, when?

Going from one medium to the next is challenging. TJ Walton, a painter now working with charcoal on paper is in uncharted artistic waters. “Changing mediums has become the way for continued renewal. It keeps my career both exciting and hopeful”, says TJ. Her beautiful studio is a real treat to visit. A new work “Still Life with Eucalyptus” (24”x30”) was created after a master drawing class with Robert Henry. Strong lines and bold compositional choices, trademarks of Walton’s, are vibrant and raw in this new medium. Currently representing herself, a stop at TJ Walton’s studio is seeing a great artist at work.

Paper constructionist and painter, Karen Coill is starting a stationary business online, www.peganddick.com. Her collages are made from vintage papers reconstructed to form an alternate universe of whimsy and fantasy landscapes. The use of color and construction draws from the surreal school, where cars, flowers and people are symbols for more. We discussed Coill’s artistic process “When I work in collage I am looking down, working within a small intimate scale. When I paint, the act of making a mark is very physical and less certain. I step back. I move forward. I look around”, says Karen.

Launching in the spring of 2010, her stationary sells at $20.00 for a set of 6. They are divine! Represented by Schoolhouse Gallery for her paintings, Karen also has an artistic life in Limerick, Ireland.

Know worldwide for her photography, Marian Roth moved to oil on canvas after 35 years in photography, fifteen exclusively in the pin hole realm. Also a teacher, her great art has garnered Marian acclaim among her peers, most notably a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2001. With collectors as styling as Ralph Lauren, Roth’s new work is the graceful transition of a master moving from one medium to another. Also a student of Robert Henry, her paintings are very powerful in their composition. The Backshore, 24”x36”, oil on canvas depicts the walk from Long Point to Wood End. “Provincetown is my home in both the physical and spiritual sense, and I want to be able to make art that expresses the feelings of connection, contemplation and wonder that fill me here”, says Marian. Represented by Kobalt Gallery, her new work is profoundly beautiful.

To change course took courage for three Provincetown women, with extraordinary results!
