Notes from Lands End: June 22

Interview with PIFF’s Executive Director, Gabrielle A. Hanna

June 21st, 2010

In its twelfth year, the Provincetown International Film Festival’s magic is all over Commercial Street! People scurry to get to the next film. Hopefuls wait in line for a sold out show. Orange shirts (volunteers) run around with clipboards and walkie talkies. Over 64 local and national sponsors, including HBO and ICELANDAIR, hundreds of patrons, local businesses and friends make this event possible.

In its twelfth year, the Provincetown International Film Festival’s magic is all over Commercial Street!

Established in 1999, PIFF now has 5000 thousand plus attendees, 65 films, bringing the best of cutting edge Art House cinema to the Outer Cape. I picked up my press pass at the festival’s lovely hospitality room, hosted by Gabriels. It was packed with media, directors and patrons. Generously donated by guest house owners Elizabeth and Elizabeth, they love meeting the people who create the films. We all adored noshing on delicious offerings from Farland Provisions.

At the helm of this cinematic phenomenon is Gabrielle A. Hanna, Executive Director. She is a calm, focused captain of her ship. This curious reporter asked what is next for PIFF.

Q: PIFF got a nod from Variety’s Gordon Cox as an A-lister Event for independents. What do you want next for the festival?
Gabby: We are raising the funds for acquisition of the Whalers Wharf Cinema and Gallery. It would realize our dream for a home in Provincetown. The purchase would bring a 70 seat cinema, screening room, gallery and permanent offices for PIFF.

Q: What have you done in film prior to this festival?
Gabby: I raise money.

Q: And you do it quite well judging from the powerful sponsors and exponential growth of PIFF. How much does the organization need for the cinema purchase?
Gabby: $450,000 by January 31st, 2011 to purchase the building. After that, we project $600,000 for renovation, new equipment and capital reserves.

Q: What will the cinema bring to the festival?
Gabby: It expands our mission to bring year round art house programming, providing a local filmmakers venue and the revival of the PIFF Film Institute. This benefits the town as well.

Q: You have this amazing raffle for a trip to Europe. How is that going?
Gabby: It’s sold out. I thank ICELANDAIR for making it possible.

Q: Wouldn’t it be great to have a PIFF Cinema as a part of Provincetown’s arts community?
Gabby: (with a huge smile) Yes!
