Richard and Wayne's garden. |
Notes from Land's End: July 12
The Annual Secret Garden Tour
By Laura Shabott
July 12th, 2010
t’s no secret that I love a beautiful garden. This excited reporter couldn’t wait to find out who was in this year’s 13th Annual Secret Garden Tour. What a pleasure to see the private beds and blossoms tucked away on the side streets and behind manicured hedges along Commercial Street. I knew I was in for a treat.

Every garden has one thing in common; devoted people who create and maintain it. In 1986, Richard Fletcher and Wayne Powell of Lovett’s Court took a dried up yard and tuned it into the Garden of Eden. Resplendent with a Sour Cherry Tree (yum), grape arbor, bee balm and daisies, the partners reminisced about their garden’s humble beginnings. “We dug out each section of grass by hand. It took years!”said Richard.
Down the street on Daggett Lane, David King and John Frishkopf have created a lovely relationship between their house and garden. Masterfully renovated by Rupert Bankert, their abode sits cozily in a yard filled with heirloom hollyhocks, bee balm and grapes. In the back, a salad garden is just steps away from the kitchen. Wow.

At the crest of the hill at 175 Bradford, Reed Boland’s fantastically stepped garden has 35 varieties of roses, 50 kinds of Day Lilies and 20 different Clematis vines. It is a full on blast of color and a painter’s delight. This is the work of a master.
On a botanical high, I peeked into PAAM for their accompanying show, ‘Art of the Garden’. Curated by visionary Christine McCarthy, I was immediately drawn to Nanno De Groot’s piece ‘Two Sunflowers’. She used bold brushwork, rich color and an intimate composition to create a masterpiece.
There was a round of applause from garden enthusiasts for Suzy Bales’ greatly anticipated lecture at PAAM. Winner of the ‘Garden Writer of the Year Award’, ‘Quill and Trowel Award’ and author of eighteen books, it was a privilege to have an internationally renowned gardener join us to celebrate Provincetown’s love affair with gardens.
