The Friday Night Gallery Stroll: Part One
By Laura Shabott
August 29th, 2010
Hundreds of people filled Commercial Street to partake in one of Provincetown’s greatest rituals: the Friday Night Gallery Stroll. Artists, collectors, friends, family and tourists flit from gallery to gallery like hummingbirds. It is delightful; an affirmation of our stronghold as a formidable arts colony.

The whole town was out for the opening of Mischa Richter’s ‘Saudade’ at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. I bought his beautiful book of the show. Crowds packed the four shows including the ‘12X12 Artists Panels: An Exhibition and Silent Auction’ where artists donate all or part of the proceeds to PAAM. Hung in a tight tile arrangement-this show is a visual blast of Provincetown’s visual artists. The panels included a lovely painting by Marion Roth and a stunning landscape by John Dowd.
Next stop was Julie Heller Gallery East where Michael Costello showed new work. A visual departure from his painting, this erotic series was well hung in so many ways. I ran into writer Sue Harrison and we strolled over to the schoolhousegallery.com Schoolhouse Gallery with the rest of the crowd. People were packed into the group shows with Mark Adams’ drawings a standout.

ArtStrand, also at The Schoolhouse building, had a group show including Jim Peters’ ‘Fusion2010’. A serious figurative artist, Peters pushes compositional boundaries with extraordinary drawing and mixed media. Oh, and this year’s limited edition ArtStrand Art Book is gorgeous. A compilation of images by the gallery’s formative roster, it is a wonderful collectable. Gallery Director Elizabeth Winston was thrilled with this year’s edition, saying there are only eight left.
Back on the street, I wandered up to William-Scott to see the luscious work of Chet Jones and over to Albert Merola Gallery for master abstractionist Helen Miranda Wilson’s annual exhibit. Next week, we’ll take an art stroll in the middle of town and the west end.
Heading home, after a lovely evening, I was grateful for the talent of the artists among us in Provincetown and the support they receive from the community.
Artistic bon vivant Laura Shabott loves to write about Provincetown. A graduate of the SMFA, Boston, she is passionate about writing, acting and painting.
