Reeling under ‘The Weight of Water’

It’s especially apt that Myra Slotnick’s play “The Weight of Water” is in a staged reading at Payomet Performing Arts Center on Sunday. It’s about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and on Cape Cod we have just gone a round with Hurricane Earl.

“How did her one and only home of forty-four years become Ground Zero of a down-and-out actor from L.A. and a runaway from Alabama?”

Slotnick’s play focuses on the story of Pearl Haynes down in New Orleans who makes it through Katrina just fine. Then two members of the local rescue squad show up and things take a different turn. The question becomes, who is rescuing whom. And, as the press release for the play asks, “How did her one and only home of forty-four years become Ground Zero of a down-and-out actor from L.A. and a runaway from Alabama?”

Everything falls apart and no amount of Bible scripture can help Pearl get away from her haunted past when the present comes to call.

David Drake directs and the actors in the reading are Geany Masai, Erica Bradshaw, Andrew Clemons, Caitlin Langstaff and Dwayne Sneed.

Payomet is located on Old Dewline Road in Truro in the Highland Center.

The reading is at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5 and is part of the Payomet Zydeco Festival. Tickets are $8. Other events there on Sunday are a movie about Mardi Gras and music by Jeffrey Broussard and the Creole Cowboys.
