Notes from Land's End: Sept. 6
The Friday Night Gallery Stroll: Part Two
By Laura Shabott
September 6th, 2010
Friday night of Labor Day is a special time for Provincetown galleries, marking the beginning of a month of great art. With wine glass in hand and rain gear on the ready, people came out in surprising numbers the night of Hurricane Earl’s arrival. I love this weekend of shows and went out on Commercial Street for a gallery crawl.

Painter John Dowd’s annual show at William-Scott Gallery is always a highlight of this weekend. His architectonic landscapes are romantic, a study of light on the homes that surround us. A Provincetown treasure, Dowd’s sustaining years as an artist are widely respected and collected.
Across the way at Wohlfarth Gallery (432), Jonathan Blum, Brooklyn and Provincetown, was selling hundreds of works on paper; monoprints, collages, woodcuts and drawings in a one day show. A portraitist with unusual imaging, Jonathan is truly an original cut. His Red Heifer monoprint “Cowch” is great.

Further down by Johnson Street, Kobalt Gallery (366) showed new paintings by Cherie Mittenthal, Executive Director at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. Whimsical images of animals, figures, flowers and other creatures are delightful. This series of 12x12 panels, made with encaustics, oil sticks and mixed media, are unique in their content with a fresh use of color. Shown is “Pig with Cormorant at the Beach”. Beautiful!
RAW, a LGBT journey of strength, resilience and independence, is a photography show created by the impassioned Lee Castoro and shot by camera master Jake Fink. Currently on view at the truly Provincetown Julie Heller Gallery, the main gallery at the beach off of Gosnold, this roving show will leave on a national and international November 1st. Castoro’s goal is to raise $1,000,000.00 for AIDS organizations. The imagery is strong and the message is clear in this global endeavor.
I finished my stroll at Southstream Design 200, a new gallery at the corner of Court and Commercial. The newly wedded Karen Coill has launched peg+dick, a new line of cards and plates that are a gorgeous collectable. Her series of vintage imaged collages are filled with metaphor, romance and a stunning reuse of existing materials. A series of note cards, made in Provincetown, or one of three sized decoupage plates are beautifully priced gifts.
