The Art of the Tattoo

Notes from Land's End: May 8

May 9th, 2011

With summer fast approaching, bare arms, legs and backs will reveal our cultural ardor for the art of the tattoo, an ancient technique using needles and ink to create pictures on the skin. The history of the practice is as varied as the cultures that embody it. Intrepid sailors, pirates and naval men have marked their arms during their high sea journeys for centuries while traveling circus people, covered in wild images, brought the sensation around the United States in the mid 1850's. Today, the craft blends the aesthetics of Japanese, Early Americana, Tribal and Maritime themes with the unique visions of the artists themselves. Here in Provincetown, we have two amazing tattoo studios that create a lasting impression.

Provincetown’s tattoo studios are created by local working people, with a passion for their medium and a savvy entrepreneurial spirit.

Coastline Tattoo Studio, owned and operated by designer/tattoo artist Kris Smith, is known for its fantastic custom designs, co-created with the client. “People come to our place to take home a little piece of Provincetown and to see their design come to life” he says. Since 1991, Kris has also worked in the Czech Republic, New Orleans and Philadelphia, bringing his extraordinary drawing skills and a world view to the craft. Tucked in a pathway across from the Portuguese Bakery, the studio also features the work of visionary Scott Bruns, apprentice Tony Edwards and the spicy Joy Lessposh, a Baltimore sensation. This very talented group also paints, draws and shows their other work with the vibrant Helltown Workshop located in Whalers Wharf.

On the corner of Standish and Commercial, Mooncusser Tattoo and Body Piercing is a family affair, co-owned by sisters Deirdre and Andréa Tasha, daughters of renowned Provincetown sculptor Carl Tasha, and Truro's own native son, powerhouse Khristian Bennett. Legendary for his bold designs, his work is exotic in composition and solid colors. Andrea is a master of black/gray designs with a gorgeous sense of rendering. Her career began at NYC’s famous Rising Dragon in 1997. “Tattoos are REAL, tangible, and they can be done to honor love, life, loss, and strength--the real stuff of living. Unlike so many things these days, your tattoo is truly yours to keep. As we Mooncussers say: take it to the grave, Mateys!” They welcome recent addition Sean Shea of RISD and Eastham. This season’s roster of amazing guest artists include Phuc Tran, of Tsunami Tattoo in Portland Maine.

Each establishment is super-clean, absolutely strict with its qualifications for artists and trained in medical safety. Provincetown’s tattoo studios are created by local working people, with a passion for their medium and a savvy entrepreneurial spirit. Check out their websites, the very favorable reviews on Google and Facebook pages for artist’s flashes (portfolios) or stop by while you’re in town.

Andrea X. Tasha’s “Monumental Cleavage” is sported by vegan chef Star Chicaderis of To-Go-Go at Bradford Natural Market. “Parrot” is by Kris Smith and “Anchor” is by Khristian Bennett.
