Toby Sisson at the Encaustic Conference. |
Going Global, Provincetown Style: Part 1
Notes from Land's End: June 6
By Laura Shabott
June 6th, 2011
Artists from 35 U.S. States and 6 countries (Brazil, Spain, UK, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand) gathered at the Provincetown Inn this past weekend to immerse themselves in the medium of encaustic wax. Joanne Mattera, Founder and Director of The Encaustic Conference, says, “Having this festival in collaboration with Castle Hill is a match made in heaven.” Hundreds of people were darting from workshops, like “Monotype Marathon”, listening to the sage words of Professor Toby Sisson and buying materials from vendors that span the globe. Their collective love for wax and pigment was infectious.

I stopped by Kobalt Gallery (336) to view the conference’s juried show. Curator Francine D’ Olimpio selected works that encompassed a wide range of composition and content. One standout is “Bee Habitat” by Venezuelan Elena De La Ville, a piece using fabric, rust and beeswax. “The sculptural form even attracts bees”, said the artist/bee-keeper. "Over 120 participants are also attending post conference workshops at Castle Hill", says Cherie Mittenthal, their Executive Director. “Joanne and I worked very hard to make this the most exciting conference ever.” Brava, ladies.
High-octane comedian Mimi Gonzalez is back for Women of Color Weekend after entertaining American troops in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Her mother says, “So pretty. Then [she] opens her mouth and spoils it all.” This Cuban-Italian firecracker was performing at the old El Caribe, formerly the Landmark, now El Mundo (269). An absolute favorite of the Women’s Four [Memorial Day, Women of Color, Girl Splash and Women’s Week}, Mimi was thrilled to be back.

British “band-in-a-body” ZOE Lewis debuted her musical, “Snail Road”, in collaboration with Counter Productions and producer Mark Cortale at the Art House (312). How could it not be a hit? Hope to see you there at one of the performances, June 9-12, 7:30p.m.
Musical force John Thomas has joined with Romanian Radu Luca to create WorldFest, Provincetown’s International Cultural Fest June 10-12. Thomas says, “We want to improve the quality of life for our industrious international work-force. This is an opportunity for them to express their creative side.”
Free events include an exhibition at Berta Walker Gallery (208 Bradford), a live music jam at the Waterford (386 Commercial) and a musical concert at the UU Meeting House (236 Commercial). Sponsored in part by the town’s Tourism Fund, this event “could be the first step in creating a Resource Center to offer essential information about the services available to everyone in Provincetown.” says Radu.
