Treat Yourself to the Shui Spa Experience

May 10th, 2009

Many of us have an ingrained resistance to the luxury of going to a spa. A wall comes up when we even hear the word, and visions of pampered socialites paying to wear cucumber slices on their eyes while drippy New Age masseurs pontificate on the “mind-body connection” flit across the mind’s eye. We can’t imagine spending our hard-earned cash on such frivolity.

The chardonnay treatments put the antioxidants [found in the wine] into your skin,

But hold on a minute – spas may be relaxing and enjoyable, but they are not frivolous. Medical science tells us some of these services are actually important additions to a healthy lifestyle. Massage, for example, is known to relieve back pain, boost the immune system, reduce anxiety, temporarily lower blood pressure, and ease the pain and side effects from certain medically necessary procedures, such as the treatment of cancer.

At Shui Spa, located at 82 Bradford Street in Provincetown, the mind and the body are treated year-round with a full array of services, including facials, massage, reiki, manicures, pedicures, reflexology, and more.

As we learn more and more about the medical benefits of some spa services like reflexology and massage, our hesitation to indulge begins to melt away. But Spa Director Michael Ferrick invites people to come to Shui “just for the relaxation.” There is a wide range of spa services on offer, delivered in a peaceful, pleasant atmosphere, infused with invigorating fragrances.
One of the specialties here is a range of facials ($139 for 65 mins.), which may incorporate the use of Neem, Omega 3, Gotu Kola, vitamin C, or deep-sea algae and kelp. Facials are designed for specific skin issues. For example, the Neem Healing Facial is designed to purify and soothe even the most delicate skin, while the Vitamin C Infusion Facial is used to restore elasticity, firmness, and hydration, and to even out skin tone.
As far as massages go, Shui offers a variety of options, from deep tissue massage ($129/ 50 mins. and $179/80 mins.) to loosen specific areas of tension in the body to warm stone massage ($179/80 mins.), which utilizes heated Basalt stones from the dry riverbeds of Mexico to relax your muscles, improve circulation, and calm your nervous system.
“You sit down with one of our estheticians or massage therapists, and go over how you’ve been taking care of [yourself] and you leave feeling better,” Ferrick summarizes with simplicity.
On your way out, don’t forget to shop for at-home pampering. Shui Spa carries Sundari spa products, as well as the Olavie line of chardonnay spa products. The Olavie products are used in several spa services as well, including manicures and pedicures ($69/65 mins. and $59/50 mins. each), deluxe finishing treatment with warm exfoliating paraffin hand glove treatment ($149, including manicure and pedicure), and a chardonnay facial ($109/50 mins.).
“The chardonnay treatments put the antioxidants [found in the wine] into your skin,” Ferrick explains. They also have a nice, slightly sweet scent to them that adds to the overall sense of well-being.
Shui even collaborates with our local Truro Vineyards for their special “Renewal – The Couple’s Getaway” package, which treats couples to 50-minute couples massages and some Truro Vineyards Chardonnay to drink, all for the package price of $419/couple.
Other special packages currently on offer include the “Revive” special ($299), which includes head-to-toe pampering with your choice of one of Shui’s deluxe facials, a hair and scalp treatment, a back scrub, warm exfoliating paraffin gloves and slippers, and a leg and foot treatment. (What a great gift for yourself or your mom this weekend). Then there is the “Full Body Journey” ($190), which includes the Shui Spa signature deluxe facial and a wonderful 25-minute full body scrub. The combination of these two treatments is said to “take you to another level of relaxation while hydrating and nourishing your skin.”
Hungry guests are able to order fresh made spa wraps to eat on the lower level of the spa in a dining area adjacent to the Italian sea salt mineral bath, or in the courtyard, under the calming eye of Shui’s large Buddha statue.
“We’re like a little hidden jewel in Provincetown,” says Ferrick with a smile.
Shui Spa is located at 82 Bradford St, Provincetown. The spa is open year-round (M.-Th.: 10-5; Fri.: 10-7; Sat.: 9-7; and Sun. 9-5), with extended hours beginning Memorial Day weekend. For general information and details on their specials, call 508.487.3583
