Interview With…Laurie Roles

July 12th, 2010

How did you get started in fitness?

My passion is to make fitness fun, accessible and affordable.

I’ve always had a lot of energy. Over the years, I’ve realized that channeling that energy is imperative to staying fit; not just physically but mentally as well. Recent studies show that it takes as little as eight minutes of exercise to release the serotonin that increases your overall sense of well-being.

When I learned that one of the leading causes of death is a sedentary lifestyle, I thought, “This is crazy, this is preventable”. In 2004, I became a certified personal trainer and then received specialized certificates in Senior and Youth Fitness. My passion is to make fitness fun, accessible and affordable.

You teach a class called the Big Skinny. What's your class like?

All my classes incorporate the major components of fitness; strength training, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and balance. One class member Barbara Edwards (aka Lady Barbara) says “it’s fun because we don’t do the same thing [exercises] every session”. “I like to vary the muscle groups and locations. Sometimes we go outdoors and use playgrounds or the piers”, says Laurie. “Circuit training is adaptable to all fitness levels, with endless possibilities for variety.” Lady Barbara adds “I enjoy the group of people. We motivate each other to stick with it. My balance has improved greatly and I am much stronger.”

How did you discover Provincetown?

I was conceived right here in Provincetown. After that, our family used to visit every spring. My siblings and I would spend hours on the flats during low tide. After college, I decided to spend a summer in Provincetown writing. I didn’t get a lot of writing done [whoever could in your first summer] and fell in love with Provincetown’s beauty, freedom and diversity.

Why did you start the Drag Kickball Fund Raiser?

I started the open kickball games in 2006. Very different people had a lot of fun together. It was like hiding the “pill in the food”. People were getting fit and having so much fun playing together it didn’t feel like ‘exercise’.
Provincetown’s recreation department donated the field so in an effort to give back we organized the benefit game. Over 400 hundred people watched the first Drag Kickball Game resulting in a $3500 donation to the Community Center. With Drag Kickball 2, we donated $4500.00 to the Trevor Project, a teen suicide hotline, and $1500.00 to the Provincetown Teen night.

Who’s on this year’s teams?

Varla Jean Merman, Ms. Richfield 1981, Cashetta, Sharon Needles, Winsor Newton, Molly Ringworm, Della Catessan, Heada Lettuce, Katie Ladoux as Katie Ladoux, Tayna Hyde, Dana Danzel and Pearlene. Comedians Jenny Mcnulty, Poppy Champlin, Mimi Gonzales will referee for this not to be missed event.

Ooh, that sounds hysterical. When is it happening?

The third kickball game between the ‘Kickers’ and Provincetown's finest entertainers will take place at Motta Field, (Winslow St), on July 17th, rain date July 18th. Kickoff is at 3 pm, gates open at 2:00 pm. A raffle and refreshments will be available. This year’s proceeds from ‘Drag Kickball 3’ will go to Helping Our Women.

Tickets are $15.00 (preferred seating) and $10.00 for general seats. I suggest buying tickets ahead of time. They will be on sale at City Video starting Monday July 12. Or just show up, purchase one and cheer us on.

Is there anything that you want people about exercise?

Fitness and recreation create a happier, more productive person.
