Healthy Eating in Provincetown

Vegetarian and Vegan Options Grow!

June 17th, 2013

Provincetown's highly popular 141 Bradford Natural Market has opened a new take-away shop called 141 To Go ,located at 148 Commercial Street. This bright and well-organized little spot offers design-your-own salads from their highly varied selection -- you choose your greens, a choice of five protein and/or veggie toppings and your preferred fresh dressing. An array of delicious and healthy add-ins such as avocado, sesame tofu, organic hard-boiled eggs, seeds, fruits and nuts makes this a meal you’ll want to keep coming back for!

Top off your meal with freshly made fruit and vegetable juices, or a tasty and nutritious smoothie

They also have vegetarian sandwiches and side dishes, pre-wrapped and ready to put in your picnic basket. You can top off your meal with freshly made fruit and vegetable juices, or a tasty and nutritious smoothie for dessert (my next visit, I'm having the Raw Cacao Bliss!). Nutriboosts including bee pollen, hemp or goji can be add to any juice or smoothie, or "power shots" of wheat grass, ginger juice or blue green algae.

Snackers aren't left out either; they offer a wide variety of gluten-free cookies and pastry, organic chips, fair-trade chocolate, and a lovely selection of bottled juices and teas.

The Grab 'n Go Health Bar at 212 Commercial Street has designed their menu around vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and raw foods! They serve salads, wraps, soups, sandwiches, zucchini noodles (choice of marinara, or walnut basil pesto), raw desserts, chia puddings, and roasted veggies. They offer lunch specials, use as many organic and locally sourced ingredients as possible, and they rotate their menu regularly. The also make juices and smoothies fresh to order of organic fruits and vegetables, and they even sell vegan soft-serve ice cream!

Owner Lisa Bergeron opened Ptown Café at 258 Commercial earlier this spring, and her small outdoor seating area is always full of people relaxing with her lunch foods, snacks and drinks. Her menu includes a fantastic tomato and mozzarella sandwich on sourdough with arugala and basil oil, or freshly made pasta salad with veggies. You can relax with an aromatic herbal iced tea with lemongrass and rose hips, or enjoy a cup of their roiboos (aka African red bush) tea, which in addition to its robust body and great fruity tang, is also very high in antioxidants. Teas come unsweetened, but they have honey and other sweeteners available if you want to add them.

Napi's Restaurant on Freeman Street has had a sizable vegetarian dinner menu for some time, and has several choices available on their lunch menu as well.
Sal's Place at 99 Commercial has added a Living Well menu of specific vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes, and has also re-labeled their regular menu to indicate additional options for vegetarian appetizers, soups, and entrees.

Many other restaurants in town offer vegetarian options, but if you start with these spots and compare notes with locals, you'll never be hungry!
